Retired Judge Lawrence J. Block, of the United States Court of Federal Claims, died Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the age of 74. Judge Block was appointed to the United States Court of Federal Claims by President George W. Bush and joined the bench on October 3, 2002. He retired on January 8, 2016.
Judge Block was born in New York City in 1951. He received his B.S. degree from New York University in 1973 and his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School (now the University of Illinois School of Law) in 1982.
Prior to his appointment to the court, Judge Block clerked for Judge Roger Miner of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. After his clerkship, he worked as an associate for the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. From 1986-1990 he was an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, then served as senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
