Mary Abate

Mary Abate is an Assistant Chief of the Court of Federal Claims Section of the Justice Department's Tax Division and the Immediate Past President of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association. During her thirty-six years with the Tax Division, Mary has handled virtually every type of complex tax case litigated in the Court of Federal Claims and its predecessor, the Court of Claims. For several years she was an Articles Editor for the ABA Tax Section's journal The Tax Lawyer and a member of the Tax Section's Court Procedure Committee. She has been a panelist or planner for various IRS tax law conferences and she is a recipient of the IRS Chief Counsel's Mitchell Rogovin Award, in addition to numerous Tax Division awards.

Mary was a member of the Board of Governors of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association for two three-year terms, and also served as Co-Chair of the Rules Committee, contributor to the Fifth Edition of the Deskbook for Practitioners, Editor-in-Chief of Inside 717, and Board Secretary. She is a graduate of Duke University, where she was inducted into Eta Sigma Phi (the national Latin and Greek honorary society), and Rutgers University School of Law, where she was an Articles Editor on the law review. Between college and law school, Mary taught junior-high English in California, and English Poetry at National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan.
